….a well thought out lighting plan serves a critical role in ensuring a seamless ambient and harmonized flow…Dimmers, spots, soft lamps or a cluster of candles, all lend a layer of depth and interest to an otherwise one dimensional interior, while conjuring a moodier warmth and intimacy…

Soft lit lamps add instant atmosphere making any space feel cosier and more relaxed than a solitary overhead pendant light…..don’t be afraid to mix it up, but be sure to blend your style of accessory choice….creating balance with height, form, texture, finish and fabrics….

Flank two lamps on a console table, either side of a headboard, or position equi-height on sofa end tables to create a dramatic impact and focal point, or use contemporary “deco” style bulbs within a pendant drum base to anchor the centre of a room…

Candle clusters, either pillar style in clear or uniform coloured glass storm lanterns, mini tea-lights on a mantelpiece lined up in a symmetrical row or descending order of size, looks stylish and orderly creating an instant set piece…..while one neutral candle colour allows a combination of different shapes and heights, without looking busy or disjointed.

Bouncing natural or artificial light also works in glitzing it up….glossy floors, light reflecting chrome furnishings, positioning of mirrors, or a twinkly chandelier, will bring any room to life!

So there’s absolutely no excuse….the gloomiest of haunts can be transformed with the clever and subtle use of layered lighting, adapting to time, days and seasons….while experimenting with wattage, candles and light reflecting materials will create an inviting, comfortable and chilled out sensual haven…

These are some of my favourite examples designed by Louise Bradley – London (pics 1-4) and Nicky Joffee – Australia (pic 5), which illustrate exactly how effective (natural or artificial) light can enhance an interior setting!
